82 VW Rabbit 1.7L gas engine

For the last week when I start it up it goes into a very high idle.Once it warms up it runs fine.My Bunny has 170,000 miles on it.Always maintained. Is there some kind of idle thing that isn't working when the temps outside are cold?Like 35 or 45 degrees??TAOT!!!!!!!

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Likely an idle air control valve problem.

What's your shop manual say?

No IAC valve on an '82 Rabbit, but there is an Auxiliary Air Valve.

It's controlled by a bimetal spring & bypasses extra air around the throttle plate when the engine is cold.

Get a Bentley manual if you plan on working on it yourself. Others, including Haynes and Alldata, are virtually useless when it comes to VWs.
