My brother has an '89 buick century, and is going to put a trailer hitch on it. How easy would it be to do all the wiring for brake lights, runners, and blinkers ourselves? We have a Haynes manual which I assume lists what each color wire is for. What would be the best way to do something like this? I always worry about messing with the electrical system of a car. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

The Haynes manual is a table prop at best. Very generic and lackluster, that's why it is cheap.

You can simply go to any parts store that sells the Hoppy LiteMate system. They have the direct plug in harnesses that don't require any splicing, they use the vehicle's body connectors and plug in line. This is the only way to go.

That being said, you're not going to be able to tow much with a Buick Century....
