Suspected Problem with Auto Transmission

Have never used an auto tranny before. Purchased a brand new OPEL OMEGA and am faced with a strange problem:
When I shift to drive and stop <with the tranny still in DRIVE> there is a minor shudder and vibration. This gets much more if the AC is on and feels like the engine is under a lot of strain. Is this normal or something I need to get checked.
To avoid this problem, I shift into N before actually stopping <to avoid hearing the strained engine>. Is this an OK practice or will it affect the transmission adversely?

Many thanks for your time, folks.

Sure sounds strange to me. I would bring it in, it's a brand new car. Let them go through it.
