1997 Mustang Convertible

My Mustang has an oil leak in the rear. I first noticed a burning smell from the rear wheel wells, then found oil on the mufflers. A closer inspection showed fair amount of oil on the underbody dripping onto the mufflers. My first though was a leak in the pinion seal. My mechanic checked it and feels it's ok. The only other possiblity is a leak in the hydraulics for the convertible top.

I took out the seats and side panels to inspect the pump and hoses. I can't find a leak.

Any ideas???

You might want to have a good look at the axle shaft seals. Seen quite a few of these on late model Mustangs.

If it turns out the axle shaft seals are leaking, replace the rear brake pads, as they'll be covered w/ 80W90.
