Ford Escape Ignition Key Fit

The ignition key does not slide in nicely. Seems to require a kind of semi-jimmy motion.

Comes out fine every time.

True for both keys. (I'm only owner.)

Am tempted to shoot some WD-40 right into the ignition lock but thought I'd check here first to make sure that's not a stupid thing to do...

I've used a lubricant on the older [in the dash] type ignition cylinders but not on something that new.
I'm not sure why [other than wear] but the key for my 76 ford F-100 works better on one side than the other. If I insert the key and it's difficult to turn, I can pull the key out, turn it around and re insert it and it works fine.

You can try some lube, but skip the WD-4o and go with a dry lube or graphite-based lubricant.

If a little graphite doesn't help, I'd look into getting the cylinder replaced - both keys acting the same way tells me it's the cylinder and not the keys.

Do you have a lot of keys or other items on your key ring? If so, remove them - the excess weight causes stress on the cylinder and it will fail faster than if you only have another key or two hanging from it.

please, no WD40. STINKS for few days.
I use regular oil, I dip key into it, slide into key hole and slide it back and for, then add some more oil. ATF works very well.
It's Ford. Their locks are notorious to go bad. You have 2 different metals contacting, creates polarity + electricity + galvanic process.
Also, please, use KEY ONLY, don't have a bunch few pounds heavy dangling on the key. Busts locks very fast.
