Please Help
I have an automatic, V6, 1996 Honda Passport. Recently I have troubles shifting gear when the engine is started. It stays dead in the "Park" gear. The only way I can shift into any other gear is by turning the engine off, and then turn the ignition switch back on half-way (before the engine cranks) to shift to "Neutral." Only then can I shift into "Drive" or "Reverse" when the engine is running.
A few friends have suggested checking my alarm system, while others speculate that it could be the result of some kind of ABS braking system switch.

Check and see if your brake lights work.
There is a brake lockout switch for the park mechanism.
If the fuse to the brake lights is blown, the brake lights AND the lockout switch will not work.
Also, check all the other fuses, as some may feed the brake light circuit.
If all the fuses are good and the brake lights work, the park solenoid may be bad.

The car will have a shift interlock system. When you press the brake pedal with the engine running you should hear a click from around the shifter's area. If you don't, either the brake pedal switch is not always functioning ( check to see if the brakes come on all of the time when the brake pedal is pressed), or the relay is dying.
