1991 Chevy Astro differential damaged?

This 1991 4.3L AT rear wheel drive was in an accident and was in "Park" when pushed across the road after the accident.
We all suspected the transmission was shot (automatic) because the vehicle rolls when in Park now. I've been getting by for awhile with the emergency brake and it runs fine.
Now it won't pass inspection of course and I find that when it's in "Park" the driveshaft is locked up properly, BUT the rear end wheels turn independent of the drive shaft. They oppose each other in rotation and there is no evidence of damage inside the differential. I have removed the rack/pinion assy. from the case and plan to get it inspected by someone. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thats normal for a non posi rear. Are you sure the driveshaft is locked...maybe cannot be turned by hand but the weight of the van can move it?

Yes, that is normal. Your parking pawl in the tranny has probably broken.
