71 olds overheating problem

hay joe

i have a 71 olds cutlass sup.350 rocket motor. the problem is the car runs fine until i turn the air on then it runs hot. i flushed out the cooling system and cleaned the outside of both rads and changed everything except the water pump.and it still runs hot when i use the air. what could be th problem?

Bad water pump is a good possibility.

Run it without the thermostat temporarily. If it does not overheat, you have a bad thermostat. If it still does, change the water pump and have the radiator PROFESSIONALLY boiled out (or replace it).

That should do it. Now's a good time to change the fan clutch as well.

Just a question, Joe, you are the pro, but I have never seen how a water pump can cause an overheating prob.

A water pump can leak, and cause it to overheat, or the bearings can go bad, but it is only an aluminum housing with a steel propeller.

In what other ways can a water pump cause overheating? Thanks, Jeremy

The impellers on some water pumps can be eroded or corroded by acids or other chemicals in the coolant. A worn impeller = reduced coolant flow = overheating.

ABSOLUTELY can cause overheating! (very common cause of it too)

Leaks coolant=reduced coolant in the system...overheats
Bearings go bad=doesn't turn efficiently, overheats.
Rotted impellers=reduced efficiency, overheating.

In fact, the Ford Taurus is recalled for EXACTLY the latter reason with regard to overheating .

Even timing that is WAY off can cause overheating (high head temperatures).
