GMC starting problem

have 1988 GMC 1/2 ton, 2WD, 350, AC, 140k miles, new fuel pump, new plugs, wires-rotar & dist. cap all OK. Takes several seconds of cranking to start, warm or cold. What's wrong & how do I check before buying new parts?

Sounds like your fuel pump relay may be bad.

The fuel pump is wired through both the relay AND the oil pressure switch. If the relay fails, the oil pressure switch will complete the fuel pump circuit after the engine builds enough pressure to close the contacts.

Turn your key to the "on" position, but don't start the engine. Listen for the fuel pump. It should run for about 2 seconds. If you don't hear the pump run, suspect the fuel pump relay.
