Stainable wood filler, what gives?

I'm working on some wood trim and bought Minwax stainable wood filler. After patching and sanding, I tried applying the stain and it doesn't penetrate the filler. I'm using a Minwax penetrating stain as the directions state. Any ideas?

Cool

You usually have to mix the stain to match in the wood filler before it sits up.

I followed the directions on the wood filler, it states to be sure that the product has completely dried before staining.
