1/2 plaster, 1/2 drywall?

I had to blow apart half of the room to put in a new header over the dining room arch. Now I have a several walls that will need new drywall but 1/2 of the ceiling is torn away. I will have to merge where the lathe and plaster meets. will this look ok or should I tear out the entire ceiling. (Please say no) is the depth of lathe and plaster similar to new drywall? also the corners where the tear out stops, I have steel mesh coming out of the existing drywall. Can I reuse it like joint tape or do I have to tear it out? It seems like if I tear it out then I will have repairs on two more walls to contend with.

also does anyone have a good primer on how to do drywall repairs from start to finish.

no need to tear out the whole ceiling
Just make sure that the drywall will be even with the plaster ceiling use shim's if needed.

and when you start the finishing process just make sure to skim the entire board with mud

get rid of the mesh and repair with tape!
