Need a little more information. Is it plaster or drywall? If drywall, are these cracks along a joint? In a corner? Straight or 45-degrees from a corner? Is there a leak above?

Cracks happen. It's part of owning a house. The key is to determine if it is caused by regular thermal expansion on aged plaster, or settlement of the corner of the house. Rout open the crack into a V-shape about 1/4" wide. Fill it with light-weight repair material then tape and mud the patch smooth.
