Full wall repair kits

Has anyone had any experience or have anything to say about those kits I've seen in some home remodeling mags that can be used to resurface old plaster walls with numerous hairline cracks or other surface damage? They apparently use sheets of fiberglass mesh and an acrylic compound that is then brushed (sprayed?) on, which will fill in and seal up numerous cracks and small holes. I've already tried to tape and repair numerous hairline cracks that run most of the length of my ceiling (1/2 inch of plaster/skim coat over 1/2 inch gypsum lath), but did a lousy job (real obvious taping an sloppy feathering. Plus, some of the cracks reappeared (solved that problem when I found and solved the poor attic ventilation this summer). Any feedback will be appreciated.
