water-damaged drywall

The drywall - which has been plastered - in our conservatory has suffered water damage from a leaky roof. The roof has been fixed, but we now need to repair the drywall and plaster.
Would it be possible to make repairs using the existing drywall? Since we are not drywall experts - and we want to DIY - what would be the best way of making the repairs?

Water Damaged Drywall

The drywall is crumbling at the edges where it was dampened.
The plaster is peeling away in the same places.
The balance of the drywall and plaster is O.K.

Drywall that has been wet and now is brittle will not get any better. The best solution is to replace it.

The failing plaster can be cleaned off and replastered. If the places where the plaster is failing are small, then some setting joint compound or shrink resistent spackle may suffice.

When you say edges, how far into the sheets is the damage? Could it possibly be hidden by installing bigger trim? Otherwise, it's pretty hard to fix crumbling sheetrock without replacing it & make it look good. Sorry for being the bearer of bad news. Tearing out & hanging new rock usually gets folks hearts a flutter in anticipation.

Best of luck. Post back if you have questions on how to do this.
