how to plaster gyprock

first timer, and it seems like I am working backwards, I was told to apply some plaster, then sand, apply- sand. I keep getting back to bare wall mainly where the joins are. question being, what to do?

By plaster I assume you mean drywall compound. Is that correct? Don't sand in between coats. And if you do just sand lightly to knock down the highspots.

If you are talking about plaster you don't need to sand, use a brush to smooth out what you couldn't get smooth with your trowel. If you are talking drywall mud, take the advice Coops gave you.
