Question soot stains in plaster ?

hello all, my first post on here.
the previous owners of my house have removed the chimney breast from the living room.

i re-decorated when we moved in after having a damp proof installed and waiting the correct time before wall papering over it.

about 6 months later i noticed a stain appearing on the newly put up wallpaper. (not in the area of the damp proof but near to the ceiling)at first i thought it was a damp stain, but i have had a builder in and he has said that it is soot soaking through the plaster from what was the rear wall of the chimney breast.

i have removed the plaster from the affected area on the wall and lo and behold there are big patches of what appears to be soot on these bricks.

do i just scrub the soot off the bricks and re plaster or do i need to treat the brickwork before replastering.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks...

Hello Burt & welcome to the forums.

If you can get all the soot off the bricks & replaster, you'd be fine I think.
