getting tile glue off

our kitchen was tiled with plastic tiles(not ceramic) they were applied like ceramic with troweled adhesive the tiles pop right off and i either want to paint the walls or retile how do i get the old adhesive off without ruining the walls

I know exactly what your talking about. That stuff is not comming off. Better to cut out that area and re sheetrock if you want to paint. I usually say you can skim it smooth but that stuff is usually 1/4" thick.

i know what you mean it was the same way in our bath and i sanded it all down to the plaster what a job that was
