Screw anchors and old, brittle plaster walls

Is there a particular anchor (plastic or metal) that works best (or better) than others for plaster walls?

Currently I can hardly get a nail in the wall as apparently there's a thin of layer metal meshing in the plaster.

I'd suggest using a toggle anchor for your wall. These are also sometimes referred to as butterfly bolts. Use a drill if needed to make the holes to insert the toggle anchor in.
