Difference between Joint Compound and Spackling Compound

Just like the title of the thread says. Both of these compound are pretty much the same right? Both of these compound can be painted over right?

They are not the same. Painters use spackel and drywallers use mud. Seriously, both can be used for small touch ups and painted over. Spackel is much softer and is good for small touch ups only.
