Losing Textured Walls

Thanks for a great forum, I am hopeless at repairs but intend changing that. (with your help I hope)

We are about to buy a home and all the walls are textured - how can I make them as smooth as a babies bottom? When answering please petend I am 5 years old lol or use the KISS method (Keep it simple (for) stupid)

Do you know what kind of texture it is? Is it knockdown?, orange peel?, stucco style?. Do you have plaster walls or drywall. How old is your house? The answers to these questions will get you the best answer. Although, It will require some skimming I'm guessing.

I am not sure coops, I am from Australia so i am unsure of names of stuff yet BUT i will find out. The ceiling looks like the stuff you see sprayed on from a can on the Trading Spaces type shows. There are so many textures here and all i want is smooth lol
