Plaster skim coat over old painted plaster and joint compound?

I would like to have the existing plaster recoated in a room. The ceiling will be new blue board but the walls will be old blue board, old painted plaster and areas of old joint compound. One wall will need a new section, 2’x5’ of blue board installed where an in-wall gas heater was removed. To keep cost down, I would like to do the prep work myself and then have a pro apply the plaster. Are there any special requirements for prepping the old surfaces or the joints between the new blue board and the existing plaster board?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You should pre fill all the gaps with a quick set mud. Other than that It's hard to say without seeing it.
