What size drywall screw?

I am using 3/8" drywall to cover over a textured ceiling, which is 5/8" drywall. What size drywall screw do I use? And, while I'm at it, what is the difference between a coarse-thread drywall screw, and a fine-thread. Does one grip better, or is more recommended for 3/8" drywall?

2" screws should be ok - nothing shorter!!

Coarse thread is for wood studs/rafters, fine thread is for metal studs.
