patching holes on the ceiling

Hi,
Here is my problem: I had some pot lights installed on the ceiling. The guy made the holes on the drywall a bit too big so the clips from the pot lights will show from the trim. My question is: is there any method to patch that holes to make them a bit smaller with some material strong enough so the clips will not cut in (because if we patch with compund the clips will cut it).

Can you get/use bigger trims? IMO that would be the easiest and best fix.
Durabond dries harder than j/c but I doubt it will make a big difference. If the cans are secured inplace patching with j/c [tape if needed] should be ok.
