Protruding Nail Head

I've got several nailheads protruding through a wall. What's the proper technique both to make sure the nail is recessed and secure and for making the wall look like new? Thanks.

Pull the nails and replace them with coarse thread drywall screws.

Quick fix is to knock the nail back in and apply 1-2 coats of joint compound, sand smooth, texture if needed and it should be ready for paint. Replacing the nail with a drywall screw should insure that it doesn't happen again.

The other fix I've seen is to drive a second nail next to the first so that the head slightly overlaps the original nail, thereby insuring that it won't back out again, and then finish. Drywall screw definitely the best bet.
