knockdown retexture over texture

I'm doing some re-modeling. Am I able to retexture and knockdown the finish over a previously textured dry wall or must I apply a skim coat over the textured wall and then retexture. I am sure starting with a flat wall/ skim coat would tend to produce the best results, but if the results are negligable, I'll just spray the texture over the old texture. Any opinions?

A lot depends on what is on the walls now, and in what condition. Ideally you always want to texture a pristine wall. Whatever texture is on the wall now, if textured over, will affect the new texture to some degree. If you currently have orange peel texture that is in good shape it might be ok to texture over it. If you have areas that have been repaired [and not textured] they may show different when textured over.
