Ceiling Pattern

How are most ceiling patterns made? I am installing a new bathroom and I need to texture the celing to match the rest of the house. It looks like a big brush was pressed up on the ceiling. How is this made? Is the created with a special texture brush? What actually makes the texture, wet drywall compound?

Thanks.

Stomp textures are normally rolled on thinned down joint compound and then the design stomped into the wet mud with a brush. there are several different types of brushes - each with their own design.

The more you thin the j/c the lighter the texture will be, heavy mud = heavy texture.
