how to adhere natural stone??

Hello all. not sure this is a plastering question...please redirect me if I am in the wrong section of this forum.... We are remodeling our basement. I want to cover one cinderblock wall with thin (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick) pieces of basalt stone. What kind of mortar do I use and do I need that metal screen on the wall first? thanks.

This would likely be better answered in the masonary section.

Most of the rock veneer I see installed is directly to the unpainted block using type s mortar. I suspect you might need to use the wire if the block has been painted.
