How to remove '70s ceiling plaster swirls?

My home was built in 1920. My den ceiling has plaster swirls which were popular in the 1970's. I'd like to restore the 1920's look and has a smooth ceiling.
How do I do such? Sanding? or Perhaps plastering over the swirls? Should I get a professional or do it myself?
Many thanks and much appreciation to anyone who may have a suggestion.

Welcome to the forums Harry!

I'd scrape what I could and then skim coat the rest.

"Should I get a professional or do it myself?"

it all depends on how much money you have or how much work you are willing to do

While working overhead is never easy - it isn't an overly complicated task.

What may be slightly easier is covering it with 1/4" drywall, taping and mudding. You will lose a 1/4 " of ceiling height, but it will be quicker than scraping
