Stripped the wallpaper, what's next?

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to these forums and I have a question! I've just finished stripping about 7 layers of wallpaper down (it all came off together) and have got to the bare wall which is a gray rough surface (kind of powder like to the touch) it's cracked in some parts and dust falls out. I know to patch the holes, but what kind of wall am I dealing with? Can I prime over this type of surface or is there an additional step I need to take?

Any advice would be very appreciated, thank you!

Welcome to the forums!

Are your walls drywall or plaster?

More than likely you will need to remove what dust you can and then prime the walls so joint compound will adhere.

Well I'm actually not sure what the walls are made of. :-/ this is a 150 yr old house. I've got it all cleaned up now, I guess I will start priming?

Unless it was changed along the way - you would have plaster.
