Question

I just bought a home approx. 100 years old. The plaster in the ceilings has begun to separate from the lathing. This is particularly true around the edges. Any suggestions?

Sounds like my house. Removal is particularly messy. With blown in insulation in my attic I'm not inclined to pull that one down especially. The easiest fix I know is covering over it with drywall. 3/8" is the lightest to hold up over your head. Use 2" drywall screws, trying as best you can to hit joists. Tape the joints, applying 3 coats of joint compound. If you're light in drywall experience you may not want to tackle the perimeter along the walls, corners can be tricky, but don't panic! A simple crown moulding looks neat, provides a little extra support, and is quite acceptable.
