tattered corner repair

I have a recessed ceiling and the exterior corners are tattered. It's where the two drywalls meet. How can I clean up the corners?

also what kind of puddy do I need to patch up holes?

Drywall is finished and repaired using joint compound. Any hole big enough to stick your finger in should be covered with drywall tape embedded in the j/c.

Exterior corners of drywall are supposed to have corner bead on them. Usually made of metal but some times plastic/vinyl. Were your corners not done that way? is there any texture involved?
