tub surround on plaster walls

My home was built in the 40s. I am in need of a new tub surround. When I tear out the old tile the plaster walls are more than 1/2 in thick. How am I going to put hardibacker on the exposed framing and bring it to the same level as the plaster? I am only able to locate 1/2 or 1/4 in hardibacker.

When you say tub surround, do you mean a fiberglass unit? Or are you going back with tile? If you mean a fibergass unit then you wont need to go back with hardibacker. If you are going to tile buy 1/2" and either shim to flush or put a layer of 1/2" and 1/4" on to flush up.
