Skim Coat Wood Paneling??
Hi, I have one wall that is covered with wood paneling. The brown paneling is painted a white semi-gloss. Underneath the paneling is sheetrock wall (not sure of the condition as I did not hang the paneling). I'm getting ready to paint the whole room and would like to try and skim coat the paneling to blend in with the rest of the sheetrock. That said, I'd like to know if anyone here has tried to skim coat paneling. In this case, what type of prep work is involved prior to skimming with joint compound? Thanks Sean

Thanks Mark. Can you tell me what the thinnest sheetrock on the market is? I was thinking of just going directly over the paneling with a few sheets fo thin rock and use liquid nails. Be pretty easy that way I think. Sean

Well, not Mark..lol.
Normally 3/8 and 1/4 rock are pretty common...somewhat depends on your area of course.
Don't forget to make sure your switch and receptecle boxes still meet code with the added thickness. Sorry, can't quote what it is...something like 5/16 below surface?

You can get box extenders for the electrical. The biggest issue is the wood trim. The base would need to be removed and then cut to fit the slightly smaller room. Same for windows/doors although you will also need to add a strip of wood the same thickness as the drywall you laminate with.
Even with liquid nail [or any adhesive] you still need to use some screws to hold it tight.
