skip troweling over existing texture?

I'm starting a living room makeover, top to bottom. I want to do a skip trowel texture on the ceiling, over the existing texture (the ever popular slapbrush pattern). I have done some skip troweling before, but it was a) a smooth surface, and b) a small bathroom (this is a 17x14 living room).

Can anyone offer advice before I start this process? Thanks in advance.

You need to scrape as much of the high stuff off and put at least one skim coat over it first. Then you can put your hand texture on. Not putting a skim on it will mess up your final look.
