Drywall for open beam ceiling: 3/8 or 1/2?

I am putting some insulation up in between the rafters of my open beam ceiling, then finishing it with drywall. This roof has only a 6 degree pitch. There's 28 1/2" of space in between each rafter. I'm adding 2 X 3's every 2 feet in between (splitting the 4 foot drywall), as well as on the edges of the drywall. Should I use 1/2" drywall? Or is there a 3/8" that I could use? It'd be nice to have less weight up there.

3/8" drywall will sag over time 1/2" will probably be ok. Generally 5/8" is needed on ceilings with 2' centers but the beams will take away the line of sight making it harder to spot any discrepancies.

1/2" is ok for 16" spans, 5/8" is recommended for 24" spans

I'd go with 5/8" but if Mark thinks 1/2" will work for you, I have certainly learned to trust his judgment and am sure you'd be fine

And you're right, this stuff does get heavy fast

I'll just split the 4' spans with two 2 X 3's (rather than just one). Thanks for everyone's input.
