cracked drywall from top of door question

There is a crack coming up and out from the top left corner of my closet door. In the winter it is much wider than in the summer. I have mudded and painted it several times and keeps coming back. What is the cause and proper repair so this doesnt keep happening? Is it where the wall ties into the ceiling? Any help is appreciated...thanks

This is an area of stress for drywall. Have you applied any tape when you mudded? I would put paper tape on the next time if you have not already done so.

Also - is it drywall or plaster? Drywall would definitely need to be taped and covered with joint compound. I've had some good luck patching plaster cracks by etching them out and then filling the crack with durabond.

Running the HVAC system year round will keep the humidity more constant and there will be less movement = less cracking.
