Old house settling causes cracks in sheetrock seams.

Old house settling causes cracks in sheetrock seams.
What can I use to repair the cracks?
Nylon seam tape?
What kind of joint compound would be the strongest?
Do I need to dig the old joint stuff out first?
Not sure where to start.

Thanks

About the only way to permanently fix it is to fix the settlement issue first. Usually it's best to use paper tape. The 'sticky' or mesh tape doesn't preform all that well. If you do use it, you need to cover it with a setting compound like durabond instead of the ready mix joint compound.
