Cement board finishing

I recently completed a wood stove install and used cement board to gain tighter clearances to combustables. I'm left with the cement board finish. See below.

I intend to veneer the rear wall with thin stone tile but I'm left with the two walls on either side of the stove (these have utilities imbedded) and I would like to paint to match the rest of the living room. What do I need besides the specific mesh for cement board?

I would think you could use either thin set or a setting compound like durabond. It's possible regular joint compound might work. It might be hard to find someone that's finished/painted cement board although I'm sure it can be done
