Wall and ceiling cracks

Does anyone know what causes wall and ceiling cracks besides just normal settling? And are these normal? Can they be stopped or fixed? I have several in a house built in the 50's and several have been "patched" but have re-appeared?

Since your house was built in the 50's I'll assume you have plaster walls. I don't know if there are any major causes other than settling and humidity changes. Scratching out the cracks and filling them with durabond is the best way I know to fix them. Spackling or regular joint compound tend to crack again in a short time
