How would you repair these two cracks in drywall

First off I am a beginner so when explaining feel free to use lay mans terms. Here are the cracks...Name:  Picture 030.jpg

I would widen the crack with one of those old style can openers. Chip off the loose paint, then use one of the ready mix concoctions that they sell in the hardware store.

I'd remove anything that's loose, scuff sand it and then tape and finish it like you'll be doing to your other repair. Scratching out the crack and filling it with durabond works good with plaster but isn't always successful with drywall.
