How to expose paper tape

Hello All.

I would like to know what would be the easiest method of exposing the paper tape that is beneath the plaster of a finished wall/ceiling. The tape that I am referring to is the paper tape that is used when doing typical drywall work or patch work.

Would using medium grit sandpaper be the only method of going about doing this ?

If it's under all purpose joint compound you can wet the compound and scrape it off with a taping knife or scraper. The compound softens when wet, a spray bottle would work. If it's painted you would have to scrape through the paint before wetting it.

Thanks Toolman.

I will give that a try. I am not certain if its all purpose joint compound but will sand/scrape the paint off first as you have suggested.

Regards

Just curious: Why do you want to dig down to the paper tape?

If the tape is bubbled, you can usually take a utility knife and cut thru to the tape to remove it. Is this regular drywall or a veneer plaster?
