Help with removing small area of broken drywall on outside wall

Thanks to mitch17, I can specify my problem. I have a small hole about 5x5 on an outside wall. How would I cut a 6x6 square away without damaging the vapor barrier? Thanks.

Utility knife, oscillating saw, Roto Zip, drywall saw your choice.
Not the end of the world if a hole gets poked in the vapor barrier.

On a hole this small I like to cut the filler first then hold it against the wall. draw around it then cut the opening. That way if the filler is not exactly square it still its.

Use a backer as described in another thread.

You can cut the opening, cut the new piece about 2" larger both ways then cut an inch off the back side of the new piece leaving the face paper intact, install that and mud around the hole and use the paper in lieu of tape.
