take the water out of the compound
I have no idea if this is an old trick or not but i figured I'd post it. My AP compound was a little too dry so I added some water and mixed it with a paddle mixer. Thats when I realized I added too much water, it was too thin. Great. I couldve left the lid off the bucket for who knows how many days until enough water evaporated to use it but i couldnt wait. So I used a 4" knife to ladle some of it out, enough to cover the inside of the lid which I put in the oven at 175° with the door open about 6". In less than 30 minutes, it went from the consistency of partially melted Carvel ice cream to something like pancakes. I dumped it back into the bucket that had about 4" in it and mixed it up again. It turned out just right, No waiting.

That's a new one on me - what did your wife have to say about using her oven in that manner?
I have on occasion had to use mud that was too thin but what I've always done is add some durabond to the mud in my pan to stiffen it up. Any ready mix mud that has had setting compound added can not be returned to the bucket as it will contaminate the entire bucket!
