Door to doorless: drywall repair or replace

I would like to replace a door with a doorless entry by just drywalling around the studded opening. I removed the casing and door jamb, but in the process discovered that the drywall is crumbling and cracked in many places along the wall (maybe I caused this when removing the casing?) Anyway, can this be repaired, or must the drywall be replaced before I can put on corner bead, etc?

Just apply sheetrock to the open edge and corner beads. You can make the boogers go away with joint compound.

The corner bead should hide most of the damage and as Larry said, the rest can be fixed with j/c.
