repair of walls after removing wallpaper and before installing tile (backsplash)

I have been removing wallpaper below kitchen cabinets and plan to install tile in the backsplash area. Removing the wallpaper has left numerous spots where paint was scrapped off, leaving drywall exposed but no deep gouges. If I were going to paint this area instead of install tile, I would, of course, repair those spots. But, do I need to repair them before installing tile? I see that as unnecessary but I would like some opinions.

The tile I want to use has 36 square pieces bonded to a mesh backing, each piece being about 1 7/8" x 1 7/8".

I'm not a tile guy but as far as I know all you should need to do is coat the damaged drywall with Zinnser's Gardz and it should be ready for tile, the mastic or thinset should take care of any discrepancies in the drywall finish.
