Jagged/cracked spackle between molding and drywall

Hello. I have a room where the spackle used by the former owner between the ceiling molding and the ceiling is cracked and looks awful (see pic). I'd rather not get involved with pulling down all the molding so my hope is to scrape/clean up the jagged/cracked spackle. My issue is after that's done, I don't want to repeat the same mistake and fill the gaps back in with spackle that may crack again.
Can anyone suggest an alternate product that I can apply with my finger and smooth out with a rag to fill in any gaps that will not crack?
Thanks for any help.

Before I caulked it I would clean up the gap with a putty knife, if not it's going to come out rough looking and there's no place for the caulk to fill the gap.
Done right only the gap gets filled, and there's none on the face of the trim or on the ceiling.
