Repairing chipped paint on metal closet rails

Hi everyone!

New DIY'er here. Can anyone tell me how to go about making my closet rails look like new again? These are sliding closet door metal rails and they have chips all over them. I'm not sure if I need to just paint over or if I need to remove all the paint and start from scratch and what I would need to go about removing the paint, etc.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

No need to remove all the paint, just sand it smooth, prime and paint.
