Immediate Help Plaster/Lath problem

I am in immediate need of advice! I have plaster sagging in the living room. My thinking was to remove the plaster and lath in a 2 x 2 square then place a piece of 1/2 sheetrock 1/2 stud to 1/2 stud. The problem is now every time I try to square the whole more plaster falls. I now have a rough 2x2 hole (without lath) what can I do.

Sounds like an ugly deal. I would take care of all the loose stuff now instead of having to go back and do it again. Is it just the plaster coming loose or is the lath also? Sometimes depending on the condition of the plaster/ lath, you can put additional drywall screws into the joists to pull the sagging lath back up and then patch the holes. If it is just the plaster crumbling off, all the loose stuff should be removed. It sounds like you are on the right track with the drywall, unfortunately you may have to do a larger section than you wanted.
