torn paper on drywall

My bathroom walls and ceiling were covered with a formica type stuff. It was glued onto the drywall so when removed it tore big patches of paper off. Is there a way to repair these tears. It's just the first layer of paper. No gypsum is exposed. I don't want to put up new drywall. Any ideas?

Cool

You should be able to skim coat the damaged surface with sheetrock mud and a wide-blade sheetrock knife, then sand, prime and paint.
Good Luck!
