Drywall over firebox?

One wall of my family room includes a steel fireplace insert. It's old, non-functional, and unneeded. Ultimately I'd like cabinets and bookcases across the wall.

Should I remove the old drywall and the firebox (and chimney up to the second story) then reframe and re-drywall, or can I simply put new drywall over the old, leaving the firebox in place covered with the new drywall?

Any thoughts?

Drywall over firebox

Encapsulating everything in drywall would appear to be the simplest approach. You will need to make sure the damper in the firebox is sealed and the chimney capped.
